The Supreme Court: Old, Outdated, and Unfortunately Important

 What is the Supreme Court?

"The highest federal court in the country and

the head of the judicial branch of government."

So, the Supreme Court. Pretty important, right? --And, yes, I am talking about those old white guys (and girls, but I mean...) sitting in a circle making decisions for us despite being almost a century old. No, I don't know why they're allowed to serve for life or who thought it would be a good idea to have some people from four generations ago making decisions. I digress. In any case, they are people we rely on, whether we like it or not. So, let's jump into it.

What even is the Supreme Court--besides the aforementioned quote and the old-white-guy part--? Basically, our justices are up there looking at laws and the like, and they decided whether or not to pass them, or if they're even constitutional. They can even call out the executive or legislative branches if needed.

Okay, I feel the need to point out that our justices aren't just old, they're ancient. Ancient as in 1789 ancient. Even though we currently have nine justices, there were only be six Supreme Court justices all the way at the beginning. That's not too surprising, though, seeing as there can be anywhere between five and ten Supreme Court justices.

We have nine justices, but what does that mean? We know they serve for a long time, most of them serve well past the traditional retirement age, like Sandra Day O’Connor who served until she was 75, a little over ten years past the average retirement age. Alright, sure, fine, they serve forever, but how do they get in? Well, the president. Yup. Love 'em or hate 'em, the president is the one who nominates justices for the Supreme Court. Of course, the US Senate has to officially approve the justices --meaning there is a little balance for who gets in and who doesn't. Since this topic is getting old quick, I'm going to end it here.

Stay spicy.
